Abortion Myths

Only some reasons are valid for having an abortion: FALSE

Many different reasons can lead women and other pregnant people to decide to terminate a pregnancy: life plans, contexts of violence, economic hardship, and health conditions, among others. Some of the women and other pregnant people who have abortions do not have children and do not wish to become parents, others are already mothers and do not want a larger family, and still others wish to become mothers at a later point in their lives.

In Mexico City—the first entity to decriminalize abortion up to the twelfth week of pregnancy—290,090 service users received legal termination of pregnancy (LTP) services between April 2007 and July 2025. 4 The most commonly used method to terminate a pregnancy was medication abortion (239,909 users, or 8 out of 10, representing 80.3%).

Women who have benefited from the LTP program in Mexico City come from diverse backgrounds, showing the wide range of situations in which access to legal abortion is essential.
